Prevention of direct access to folder within public folder using .htaccess not working

I have a folder sitting within the public folder and I am trying to prevent users from accessing files directly from this folder using a .htaccess file.

For example, let's say the folder I am trying to prevent is called apples, www.website.com/apples. So far, if someone goes to type in www.website.com/apples/secretfile.php it appears the file is accessible when it shouldn't be.

The code I have placed within my .htaccess file itself is like this:

RewriteEngine on
# -FrontPage-

IndexIgnore .htaccess */.??* *~ *# */HEADER* */README* */_vti*
# Code below prevents people listing a directory index of the site's files
IndexIgnore *

<Limit GET POST>
order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from all
</Limit>
<Limit PUT DELETE>
order deny,allow
deny from all
</Limit>
AuthName website.com
AuthUserFile /home/username/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.pwd
AuthGroupFile /home/username/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.grp

RewriteEngine On
# turn on the mod_rewrite engine
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f
# IF the request filename with .php extension is a file which exists
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/$
# AND the request is not for a directory
RewriteRule (.*) $1\.php [L]
# redirect to the php script with the requested filename

RewriteEngine on
# This code prevents hotlinking
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?website.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule \.(gif|jpg|js|css)$ - [F]

# Error page redirects
ErrorDocument 400 /400.php
ErrorDocument 401 /401.php
ErrorDocument 403 /403.php
ErrorDocument 404 /404.php
ErrorDocument 500 /500.php

# Prevent people from viewing the htaccess file period

deny from all

So what am I missing? It's still allowing people to type in the full address of files within that folder and as best as I can tell it shouldn't be allowing them to do so?

回答1:

If you already have an htaccess file with

Deny from all

and it doesnt work, then your apache web server is not configured to use htaccess. You will need to open the apache httpf.conf file and edit it. For xampp it is located in

xampp installation directory/apache/conf

In that file look for the following lines:

# AllowOverride controls what directives may be placed in .htaccess files.
# It can be "All", "None", or any combination of the keywords:
# Options FileInfo AuthConfig Limit

AllowOverride None

Change it to AllowOverride All, if its value is anything else.

Restart the apache server after this and see if the htaccess file starts working

回答2:

Within the directory apples, place an htaccess file that contains the directive

Deny from all

Even if apples is within a public folder, anything within apples will not be accessible as this htaccess will override any others.

You could place this in your .htaccess file:

RedirectMatch 404 /apples(/|$)

and any request for anything under apples would return a 404. If you prefer returning a 403 (Forbidden) then use 403 in this rule instead.

If you do not mind using a separate .htaccess file, then you could also prevent access to files in apples by placing:

Deny from all

in the .htaccess file in the apples directory.

If you find this does not work then you might need to confirm where .htaccess files are allowed.
