I've found other threads online that deal with this specific problem, but none have helped. I have two questions: One with Drupal 8, the other with telnet.
Background: A client is using a third party company to handle all of their emails. I manage a Drupal 8 site for them that sends some emails with PHP's mail() function. Unfortunately, those emails are being tagged as spam and being sent to their spam folders. The third party's solution was to set up an account on their Outlook SMTP server (not sure if I'm using that terminology correctly) for this site. I'm trying to install the SMTP Authentication module on the site but the test email won't send out. Right now I just get an error message that says 'SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host.' and I'm trying to figure out why it can't connect to the host. Obviously there are many reasons why that might happen, so I'm looking for ideas to narrow down possible problems.
What I've tried: I haven't gotten very far. I downloaded the module from it's page and uploaded it via the modules page, then went to the settings and filled out the following information:
- SMTP Server: 'smtp.office365.com'
- SMTP Port: 587
- Use encrypted protocal: Use TLS (as instructed by 3rd party. I also tried Use SSL and No)
- Username: Username given by 3rd party
- Password: Password given by 3rd party. This field is blank when I load the page after saving, but the instructions say that this is normal.
- E-mail from address: The site admin's email address
- Turn this module on or off: On
Everything else can be assumed to be blank or unchecked.
Questions:
Is there any other set up that I'm obviously missing? Any other settings I need to adjust in other files?
Is there any way to validate the credentials I was given for the SMTP server outside of Drupal? With telnet perhaps?

Have You considered installing and configuring something like Postfix and just let Drupal send mails the “normal way”?
