How have you implemented SCRUM for working alone? [closed]

I am working alone at the beginning of a sizable open source project and would like to leverage some of the core ideas/methods from Scrum to help manage my time and remain focused on development and deploying early, demonstrable functionality. I would like to hear from others who have used Scrum alone and what you have found particularly useful to these ends. Thanks. You might take a look at Peter Bell's post on Solo Scrum including the comments. If you're after solo, focusing timeboxes, try the pomodoro technique - 25 mins doing stuff, 5 mins reflection. There's a great free app here: http:/

Software tool for agile project management [closed]

We user JIRA for bug tracking and release management and we have started using greenhopper for project management inside of JIRA but one thing that it lacks is the idea of user stories versus tasks in those users stories. Does anyone recommend other task board like agile project management tools that fully support users stories and tasks as well as being fast and simple to user. I started looking at targetprocess so if anyone has feedback on that specifically it would be great as well. TargetProcess is the least intrusive project mgmt tool I've used. A common anti-pattern for Scrum and XP

Stategies for coping with schema evolution? [closed]

Currently we're using hand-rolled SQL in Data-Access objects and a lot of stored-procedures and triggers which amount to around 20k lines of code. We're finding that simple changes are causing a couple of days' work to fix, and its causing deadlines to slip. Changes include modifications to tables to cope with additional data, general refactoring of the schema based on QA/user reports, etc. Its a very active system that's being built to replace something old and slow. We looked at the PHP ORM solutions available to try and limit the effects of these changes, but they were just too slow to cope

How significant are the differences between Visual Studio Scrum 1.0 & MSF for Agile Software Development v5.0 process templates? Has anyone used one over the other? We are currently using external tools ( TRAC ) for implementing Scrum in our development process, since MS came up with additional process guidance in TFS2010, these 2 things confuse me to the core! Unsure, which one to

This question already has answers here : Is it worth to start TDD? [duplicate] Why should I practice Test Driven Development and how should I start? (4 answers) Duplicate: Why should I practice Test Driven Development and how should I start? For a developer that doesn't know about Test-Driven Development, what problem(s) will be solved by adopting TDD? [EDIT] Let's assume that the developer already (ab)uses a unit testing framework. Here are three reasons that TDD might help a developer/team: Better understanding of what you're going to write Enforces the policy of writing tests a little

Agile (Scrum) adoption - how did it go? [closed]

For those of you who have implemented Scrum in your organizations, what were your biggest obstacles and if you did overcome them, how? Background : In 2006 I contracted with a large company which had adopted Scrum cold turkey just months before I arrived. The company hoped Agile/Scrum would save their huge enterprise software product. Of the hundred or more programmers there, I worked closely with a team of about a dozen for a year, observing and participating in their Agile experiment. Summary : I believe Agile helped more than it hurt. By the end of the year, the team could consistently

Scrum Burndown issues [closed]

We have been using Scrum for around 9 months and it has largely been successful. However our burndown charts rarely look like the 'model' charts, instead resembling more of a terrifying rollercoaster ride with some vomit inducing climbs and drops. To try and combat this we are spending more time before the sprint prototyping and designing but we still seem to discover much more work during the sprint than initially thought. Note: By this I mean the work required to meet the backlog is more involved than first thought rather than we have identified new items for the backlog. Is this a common

How do you do TDD in a non-trivial application? [closed]

I've read a number of books and websites on the subject of TDD, and they all make a lot of sense, especially Kent Beck's book. However, when I try to do TDD myself, i find myself staring at the keyboard wondering how to begin. Is there a process you use? What is your thought process? How do you identify your first tests? The majority of the books on the subject do a great job of describing what TDD is, but not how to practice TDD in real world non-trivial applications. How do you do TDD? I used to have the same problem. I used to start most development by starting a window-designer to create
