Simplest crossfade sequence of images in HTML5 picture in javascript (and css) [no jquery]

Question

I am trying to make a cross-fade with a sequence of images inside HTML5 picture tag. The problem is 1) it is getting all images on the page and 2) it is not getting the WebP
