Reverse engineered what the XML config did, and this is the answer.

You have a wrap the MessageStore in a MessageGroupQueue

So it would look something like this

public MessageChannel messageStoreBackedChannel() {
    return new QueueChannel(
        new MessageGroupQueue(<>, "Group ID")
    );
}
