Here's the definition of setReplaceMethod

> setReplaceMethod
function (f, ..., where = topenv(parent.frame())) 
setMethod(paste0(f, "<-"), ..., where = where)

It is pasting a "<-" on to the name, so is functionally equivalent to setMethod("$<-"). setReplaceMethod conveys more semantic meaning.
