As of Vim 8.1.0251, using backupdir with // at the end of the path works as expected.

The issue was fixed by commit b782ba475a3f8f2b0be99dda164ba4545347f60f (patch 8.1.0251: using full path is not supported for 'backupdir') on 8 Aug 2018.

(For neovim users: the issue has also been fixed).
