Why is String.Format static? [closed]

I don't know why they did it, but it doesn't really matter anymore:

public static class StringExtension
{
    public static string FormatWith(this string format, params object[] args)
    {
        return String.Format(format, args);
    }
}

public class SomeClass
{
    public string SomeMethod(string name)
    {
        return "Hello, {0}".FormatWith(name);
    }
}

That flows a lot easier, IMHO.
