The main competitors - HyperSQL (HSQLDB), JavaDB (Derby) and SQLite (not java-based) were mentioned.

There are a few other options:

• db4o - object database
• FirebirdSQL - not java-based.
• Jackrabit - a content repository (not RDBMS) supporting embedded mode.
