protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
    string t = "test";
    drpFunction.SelectedItem.Text = t;
}

or

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
    string t = "test";
    drpFunction.SelectedItem.Value = t;
}

this is proper way.......
