According to this thread, around 5,000,000 with java, 1Gb RAM. (and that, with the 'client' version of the hotspot)
That was with a stack (-Xss) of 300Mo.
With a -server option, that could be increased.
Also one can try to optimize the compiler (with JET for instance) to reduce the stack overhead at each layer.
