Nobody is talking about seeing empty catch blocks like these....

 try{  
      //do something
    }
catch(SQLException sqex){  
        // do nothing  
    }

Also never use Exception handling for creating alternate method flows...

 try{  
     //do something  

 }catch(SQLException sqex){  

     //do something else  
 }
