Sadly, your method won't work because the angle you calculate by this method is only the actual angle if the camera is held exactly perpendicular to the plane of the joint. You need a reference square in your images in order to be able to calculate the angle at which the camera is held so as to be able to correct for the camera angle. And the reference square has to be placed on the same flat surface as the pipe joint.
