Another approach would be to use a 1D array as an 2D array. This way you only have to allocate the memory once (one continous block);
int *array;
size_t row=5,col=5;
array = (int*)malloc(row*col*sizeof(int)) //or new int[row*col]
This would result in the same as "int array[5][5]".
to access the fields you just do:
array[1 //the row you want
* col //the number of columns
+2//the column you want
] = 4;
This is equal to:
array[1][2];
