What does “rc” mean in dot files

In my home folder in Linux I have several config files that have \"rc\" as a file name extension:

$ ls -a ~/|pcregrep \'rc$\'
.bashrc
.octaverc
.perltidyrc
.

In Unix world, RC stands for "Run Control".
