Get your search view and add an OnQueryTextListener

final SearchView.OnQueryTextListener queryTextListener = new SearchView.OnQueryTextListener() {
    @Override
    public boolean onQueryTextChange(String newText) {

        return true;
    }

    public boolean onQueryTextSubmit(String query) {
        // Do something
