You can use .add() to create a new jQuery object and add to the targeted element. Use chaining then to proceed further.

For eg jQueryApi:

$( "div" ).css( "border", "2px solid red" )
  .add( "p" )
  .css( "background", "yellow" );

 div {
    width: 60px;
    height: 60px;
    margin: 10px;
    float: left;
  }
