Status bar turns white and does not show content behind it

Add this in your style.xml

    true
    @android:color/transparent

and this in your onCreate();

 getWindow().getDecorView().setSystemUiVisibility(
       View.SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_LAYOUT_FULLSCREEN);
