How do I split a string on a delimiter in Bash?

I have this string stored in a variable:

IN=\"bla@some.com;john@home.com\"

Now I would like to split the strings by ; delimite

Why this approach is "the best" for me?

Because of two reasons:

1. You do not need to escape the delimiter;
2. You will not have problem with blank spaces. The value will be properly separated in the array!
