You appear to have misunderstood the algorithm (or just implemented it incorrectly). What you're doing is this:

int fib(int n) {
  if (n == 0)
    return 0;
  else if (n == 1)
    return 1;

  int ret = fib(n - 1);
  return (ret - 2) + (ret - 1);
}

What you should be doing is this:

int fib(int n) {
  if (n == 0)
    return 0;
  else if (n == 1)
    return 1;

  return fib(n - 1) + fib(n - 2);
}
